Disaster Petitions Available for Washington County Residents
County Assessor Jason Cockerill issued a press release to help inform taxpayers that they may be eligible to file disaster petitions due to the recent tornado.

A Form 137R, more commonly called a Disaster Petition, can be filed on any real or personal property that has been partially or totally destroyed by a disaster. The form can be obtained in the County Assessor’s Office or on-line at www.washingtoncounty.in.gov.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to all of those affected by the recent tornado,” Cockerill said. “I know the last things people are thinking about right now are their property taxes; however, along with dealing with insurance and everything else, it’s a good time to be made aware of any kind of assistance available.”

Once a disaster petition is filed, the Assessor’s Office is required to do a review of the property to ensure that it qualifies for a reduction in the assessed value. The advantage to filing the petition is that the assessment can actually be lowered a year sooner than it could be otherwise. Cockerill advised that any supplemental information that a person may have, such as photographs or insurance reports, would be beneficial to file along with the petition.

“If anyone has questions or wants to know if they may be eligible to file a petition, I would encourage them to contact my office at 883-4000.”

Message from the Washington County Assessor's Office:
County Assessor Jason Cockerill has announced that personal property assessment returns have been mailed to taxpayers and are due May 15, 2012.

“These are the forms that are required by law to be filed every year,” stated Cockerill.

Cockerill went on to say, “Personal property is actually considered to be a self-reporting system meaning that it is the taxpayers’ responsibility to obtain the forms and file them with the Assessor’s Office. However, to make things easier for the taxpayers, we mail a form to everyone we have on file as having filed last year. These forms already have their data on them. If nothing has changed, all the taxpayer has to do is sign both forms and send them back. If there are additions or removals, the taxpayer simply corrects the appropriate pool data, signs both forms and sends them in.”

“Personal property can be confusing. If anyone has questions or problems completing the forms, they’re always welcome to give us a call or to come into the office and we’ll help them get their forms filed.”

The forms involved in personal property are the business tangible personal property returns (Forms 103 short or 103 long), the farmer’s tangible personal property return (Form 102) and the Form 104 which goes along with the other forms.

If anyone has personal property and does not receive a form, forms can also be obtained at the Assessor’s Office or the forms are also provided below.

Anyone who has questions or concerns is urged to stop by the Assessor’s Office located in the County Courthouse or call (812)883-4000.
